New Look Gateway to Bourne
21/11/2011
The ponds were dug out some ten years ago specifically to act as lagoons to take the surface water running off the new roads and roofs of the newly built Elsea Park housing development. Over the years lots of silt has drained into the ponds along with the surface water and this now needs to be removed before the ponds begin to clog up, threatening the wildlife habitat and reducing the ponds ability to catch the drainage water.
The de-silting work will remove the silt, existing pond weed and the older rushes and will take the opportunity to take out any rubbish that has collected at the bottom of the ponds. As far as possible the fish will be caught and stored in specialist tanks until the work has been completed. To minimise the impact on the wildlife, work will take place on one pond at a time.
Kier Homes, the developers who own the ponds, and the Elsea Community Trust, through the specialist drainage company, Fen Ditching, have worked closely with Natural England and the Environment Agency to ensure everything possible is being done to protect the ponds’ many inhabitants during the work.
On completion of the work, the ponds will look significantly worse for wear but the remedial works will begin to bear fruit in the early spring and by the summer the ponds will be looking splendid once again – and be a whole lot healthier under the water.
Angela Bailey, local resident and chairman of the Elsea Park Community Trust, the organisation that will eventually take over the maintenance of the ponds, comments: “The ponds at the front of Elsea Park have become very important to the residents of the development and the wider public in Bourne. We are delighted that Kier Homes has decided to carry out this vital work and we ask everyone to bear with us while the de-silting is underway. The work will ensure that the ponds continue to do their job for many years to come and will look even better as the gateway to the town.”
