What is stamp duty?

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a Government tax that is applied to the purchase of properties over £125,000.* (*£250,000 If a first time buyer). The level of SDLT applicable depends on the purchase price of the property but it will be between one and five per cent of the purchase price.

For First Time Buyers the threshold as to when SDLT is applicable has been raised to £250,000. This is only available if you have never owned a home in the UK or the anywhere in the world before. If more than one person is buying the property, they also cannot have been a home owner in the past.
